Homa Bay County Youth Condemn Political Leaders' Sanctimony

Youth from Homa Bay County have expressed their frustration and disappointment with the county's current political leaders. This reaction follows the leaders' strong condemnation of the brutal murder of Kasipul MP, Ong'ondo Were, just days prior.

Within a week of the tragic event, some leaders publicly claimed to know the late MP's murderers. However, this has drawn criticism from the youth, who perceive it as blatant hypocrisy. They point out the leaders' long-standing inaction regarding persistent violence in the Kasipul constituency.

On the night of Were's death, one leader acknowledged the prevalence of extreme violence in Homa Bay County, attributing it to the current political climate.

However, the youth argue that these leaders failed to condemn the violence when residents repeatedly reported it. According to some residents, the leaders had effectively compromised security agencies, hindering any meaningful intervention for victims of violent attacks.

One vocal youth, Mr. Andrew Owuor, known as Andy Janam, posted the following statement on a WhatsApp group: "In Homa Bay County, it is high time we elevated our political maturity and created an environment that respects democratic space and the leaders we freely elect. Kenya is a multiparty democracy, and every political formation has a right to exist and operate without fear or suppression. We must learn to differ on ideologies, policies, realism, and development priorities, not on the basis of threats, intimidation, or toxic loyalty.

Let us not lose our moral compass by celebrating mediocrity or shielding bad behavior simply because it suits our momentary biases. True friendship and responsible citizenship demand that we speak the truth, even when it is uncomfortable. Advising a friend while they are still alive, rather than applauding their wrongs, is the highest form of loyalty. To blindly support misdeeds in the name of allegiance is the very definition of ignorance and retrogression.

If we truly desire progress, let’s trade sycophancy for sincerity, clout-chasing for conscience, and noise for noble action."

As the youth continue to voice their concerns, the leaders have remained silent, reinforcing the perception that they only react when one of their own is harmed. The crucial question remains: who will advocate for the ordinary citizens (Wanjiku)?
